Ancient History
Archeology
Suppiluliumas was a Hittite king who ruled 1375-1345 B.C. He rebuilt Hattusas, expanded the city, and fortified it with a 4 mile long wall. Suppiluliumas was determined to annex the Mitanni kingdom. His first attempt was unsuccessful and resulted in a severe defeat. But he later secured an alliance with Artadana II who was a rival to the throne of Mitanni. In this way, Suppiluliumas was able to conquer the Mitanni capital of Washukkani. Mitanni thus became a vassal state of the Hittites.

The Hittites then attacked the Amorite kingdoms of northern Syria. This brought the two largest ones, i.e. Aleppo and Carchemish under Hittite rule. Hittite princes were appointed to govern them.

The coastal state of Ugarit also came under Hittite domination. In addition, Suppiluliumas conducted a campaign against the Kaska peoples. Suppiluliumas died of an illness in 1345 B.C. and his son Arnuwandas II became king.

Arnuwandas died after a reign of only one year.

Babel wonders: Is your paycheck a little light, ducky? Well did you know that stockholders in corporations today reserve for themselves (and deny to employees) the same privilege claimed by the French aristocracy before the French Revolution: rights to endless streams of income detached from productive contributions?
